Eighty-Nine

The latch opened and two blue eyes peered out into the sunshine. Meggie stood on tip-toe as she spoke.

“We have called to see Sister Celine of Jesus, Sister,” she said softly and the eyes behind the grill lit up with enthusiasm.

“You must be Miss Blair, Yes?”

“Yes Sister, Meggie Blair and this is my fiancee Major...”

Before she could say another word, the heavy door creaked and a young, fresh faced nun smiled happily at them from the darkened corridor behind her. She bowed slightly as she spoke.

“We are expecting you, Meggie... May I call you Meggie?”

“I’d be very happy if you would, Sister. This is my fiancee, Major Ambrose.”

George stretched out his hand and shook hands with the tiny nun who stood shyly in front of him.

“I’m sorry Sir. I don’t know how to address you,” she said and stepped back a little to allow them to pass into the cloister, as she closed the door behind them.

Meggie looked at George as mystery descended upon them and the young nun backed her way out of the room, leaving them alone, as she continued to smile gracefully.

“I’ll bet she’s got a lovely bum.”

“George... Behave yourself!.”

There was a noise behind the thick dark curtain and a door opened and closed again, before a quiet voice mumbled something on the other side of the thick curtain, which the two visitors took to be some form of prayer as it concluded with the words, the peace of Jesus Christ... and the curtains opened slowly to reveal a heavy, black iron grill, so small a mesh that it would be difficult even to put your hand through. Meggie peered into the darkness of the room behind the grill and two nuns stood there, swathed in the shadows... only their white wimples standing out in the shadows, like phantoms of another world. One nun moved forward and knelt down before the curtained window to touch the grill with her forefinger whilst the second nun faded into the shadows at the back of the room; a chaperone to her sister in Christ. Both nuns were heavily veiled from
